Always wanted to re-create my own version of a classic Golden-Age Phantom Lady comic cover. This is where digital sketching of the idea has taken me so far.

And for those that don't know...the term "Headlights" was tossed around in the '50s in reference to comic book heroines whose breasts were seen as far to pronounced on the covers. A couple of the older Phantom Lady covers were held up as perfect examples of this.

While this is a great start to recreating one of the classic Phantom Lady covers, I've always been curious about someone attempting to do a "prequel" to the most famous one, the one where she's getting free of some ropes while gangsters lurk menacingly in the background. Since its a shot of her untying herself, I've always wanted to see someone try and visualize how she was tied before she got loose. Ah well, maybe if I save a little I could commission you to do that. Someday...

This price is close to what you describe. There were two similar PL bondage covers, the one you mention and another where she is tied similar to this but the camera shot is much closer, chest & up, with head turned facing thug. Both have thugs in bg. My pose of her here is a combination of the two covers: she's posed here more like your cover where she's freeing herself but still fully tied with arms up like the other one.

I see what you're saying. Still would like to see a "prequel" to the other, famous cover, but thats a dream for another day.

While on the subject of Phantom Lady, I got my hands on the run featuring this particular version of the character. What I found interesting was that those two covers were the only ones featuring bondage, and even then only the one is really "fetishic" in any way, thanks to the way its drawn. Inside, however, there's pretty much next to no actual bondage content, and what situations do exist are extremely tame and not at all portrayed in a sexy/lurid fashion. In fact, what surprised me was the sheer amount of fanservice in the comic. The women almost always curvy paragons of beauty dressed in skin-hugging or skin-baring outfits, moreso than the superheroines of the time. In fact, thats the only content I can suppose that remotely fits Wertham's accusations toward Phantom Lady, cause otherwise, those two covers aside, there really wasn't anything like that.

Such a shame nobody has really tried to revive this particular incarnation of Phantom Lady--I'm not counting Blue Bulleteer; not even remotely the same thing.

Beautiful work -- and love the "headlights" comment from PL -- she helped pioneer them, after all :)
